Khor Musa is located at the northwestern extremity of the Persian Gulf sedimentary basin and represents one of the largest and longest marine inlets extending inland along the Iranian coastline.
The area comprises a complex system of marine, intertidal and, in some locations, terrestrial environments. Sedimentation within Khor Musa is influenced by a combination of fluvial, aeolian, tidal and biological processes.
The project area is situated at the northwestern end of the Persian Gulf, along the southern margin of Khuzestan Province, between the Arvand Rud (Shatt al-Arab) Delta to the west, the Zohreh River to the east, and Bandar Imam Khomeini Port to the north.
Hydrodynamic and Morphological Characteristics
Strong marine currents along the access channel, with velocities of up to 1.0 m/s
Presence of natural shallow-water channels in the vicinity of the project area
Significant wave heights of up to 3.0 m along the access channel

The dredging works extend between Beacons 9–14 and Beacons 23–30.
Access Channel Width: 300 m
Design Dredging Depth: 13.5 m below Chart Datum (CD)
Access Channel Length: 14 nautical miles (approximately 26 km)
Seabed Conditions: Soft fine-grained sediments with localized hard-bed areas
Required Dredging Equipment:
Both Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers (TSHDs) and Cutter Suction Dredgers (CSDs)
Dredged Material Disposal:
Offshore disposal at designated dumping grounds, with disposal operations scheduled in accordance with tidal conditions
